In this age of ‘Quarantine’, online classes are everywhere. Almost any subject can be taught online and, instead of this- many online dog training courses have come up. People are skeptical about online classes, especially about dog training classes where you specifically need to interact in real-time with your dog.
However, online training courses can be of great help if you are not yet ready to send your dog to a trainer or you need to learn a lifetime skill to help your dog or you have a puppy who is afraid and only listens to you.
If you wait for the Covid-19 to get over so you could send your dog to the training, you are making a big mistake. Covid-19 does not age but your dog does, and like humans, aging dogs lose their cognitive powers day-by-day. If you wait, your dog might not be able to learn- at all.
Is online dog training effective?
Virtual training can be good for trainers, owners, and dogs. In this article from the Washington Post, Jenifer Style, with respect to online dog training courses was observed quoting:
“Initially I said I’d wait till it’s over,” says Stile, “But then I realized that it wasn’t going to be over fast enough, and I knew I needed to train my dog and I didn’t have the tools to do that without help.”
Stile here says a similar, training your dog is as important and urgent as teaching your kid. Stile goes on to say:
“I’d been trying to watch YouTube videos and do it on my own, but I wasn’t getting that instant feedback, knowing if I was doing it correctly,” she says. “Having that feedback from a trainer who was invested in me and my dog and getting to know my dog, it was much more successful than I thought.”
Stile realized the importance of training her dog and the importance of not giving up training even during the pandemic.
What do they teach in Online dog training courses?
Puppy Training: Basic training for your puppy like loose-leash walking, ‘come’ commands. Some classes even allow online interaction with other puppies.
Beginner Training: Teaches basic skills to the dogs which have no prior training at all. Some skills include basic manners, loose-leash walking, impulse control, skills like focus, and ‘leave-it’ commands.
Intermediate Training: Builds on already provided training. Skills include training with distractions, more distances, and longer durations.
Advanced Training: This includes training your dog with advanced sets of skills like strengthening skills, being consistent with tasks and commands, etc.
What are the benefits of online dog training courses compared to offline dog training courses?
First of all, you save a lot of time and money. Secondly, it develops your dog’s focus and the chemistry between you two. When you try to train your dog by yourself, the dog gets comfortable with your commands easily.
Kelly Lee, a dog trainer based in California, said in an interview with the Washington post:
“People make progress more quickly, which I think is encouraging for them, and it’s more efficient, and many dogs who could never do an in-person class can come to these, because they’re still in their comfort zone.”
While Maura Knestout, a dog owner, in a talk with the Washington Post, said:
“An in-person group class wouldn’t have worked out for us, because she wouldn’t have been able to focus, doing the group class online, I was able to see the other dogs, and see how their handlers were working with them, but we were in our own space, so she could focus better.”
Other things that you gain from online dog training courses-
Most online dog training classes allow their members to participate in online forums and working areas. At these platforms, you can interact with other dog trainers, talk to them about their dogs, learn about their dogs, and even their lifestyle. The working areas allow you to upload videos of the owners training their dogs, so other owners can see and observe.
At the end of the day, your dog will live with you and if you learn his training habits and behavior- both of you can lead blissful lives.
